Substack alternative for WordPress
Your writing. Your readers. Your site.
Substack made paid publishing easy, and charged you a share of everything for it. The awkward part of leaving has always been the subscribers – nobody wants to ask paying readers to sign up and pay again.
Fabrica Monetization Kit is a WordPress paywall and membership plugin that gives you the same ease – in-page payment, automatic accounts, a self-service portal – on a site you own outright. And because Substack bills through your own Stripe account, your paying subscribers do not have to pay again.
What changes
The same reading experience, on the other side of the fence.
● Substack
Substack is a hosted platform. It takes a percentage of revenue, owns the customer relationship, and decides what the page looks like. A change to its terms is a change to your business, and you find out when everyone else does.
✓ Monetization Kit
- You keep every penny Stripe does not take – a flat annual licence, no commission on what you earn
- Your subscriber list lives in your own database – not in an export you have to request
- The design is yours – it is your WordPress theme, not a platform template
- More than one way to pay you – single articles, bundles, day passes, donations and crowdfunding alongside subscriptions
- It suits organisations Substack was never built for – charities, NGOs, cultural institutions
Moving across
Your paying subscribers do not sign up again.
Substack bills through your own Stripe account, which means your subscribers, their saved cards and their renewal dates already belong to you. You are not changing payment processor, so nobody re-enters card details and nobody re-confirms anything.
Monetization Kit ships with a Stripe importer. It reads the subscriptions already in your Stripe account, matches each customer to a WordPress user by email address, and gives them access. It shows you a full preview first, including any duplicate customers to resolve, and writes nothing at all until you press Run Import. It can create accounts for subscribers who do not have one yet.
The order you disconnect things in matters. The documentation covers it step by step.
Questions worth asking
If yours isn’t here, email info@fabri.ca – we usually reply within a working day.
Will my paying subscribers have to sign up and pay again?
No, as long as you disconnect in the right order. Because Substack charges through your own Stripe account, the subscriptions are already yours and there is no payment processor to change.
What happens to readers who are on the free list?
They are email addresses, not subscriptions, so export them from Substack and bring them over as you would any mailing list. Monetization Kit has a sign-up block for capturing new ones on your own site.
Do you take a percentage of what I earn?
No. The licence is a flat annual fee. Stripe takes its processing fee; nothing else is deducted.
What about the discovery Substack gives me?
That is the real trade, and it is worth being straight about it. You lose a recommendation network and gain ownership of the audience, the revenue and the design. Which matters more depends on where your readers currently come from.
